ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR (Salary Range - $56,370.99 - $66,060.36)

SCOPE OF WORK: To instruct students in the areas of composition / corequisite composition, literature, and Humanities, in both face-to-face and online settings; to work with faculty and the department chair in the development and implementation of English and Humanities course offerings. Coordinate departmental initiatives and/or institutional activities that advance the mission of the college. This position shall report to the Chairperson of the Department of English, Humanities & Languages.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Teaches courses and develops curricula in composition / corequisite composition, literature, and Humanities and related areas for face-to-face and online settings.
  • Demonstrates teaching effectiveness through the development of instructional materials that comply with established course content, incorporate technology as appropriate, integrate theory with applications, clearly define course goals, observe institutional accreditations standards, promote critical thinking and life skills, and responds to diverse academic needs.
  • Maintains accessibility and availability to assist students with their learning needs and advises individuals or groups of students in academic matters and exercises professional judgment in referring students to appropriate personnel.
  • Supervises student learning activities and academic progress and maintains accurate records of student progress and accomplishments in compliance with college requirements. Consults with and interprets these to students.
  • Coordinates departmental activities and operations by developing credit programs and/or courses, sharing teaching and learning methodologies with peers, serving as an academic resource, and providing leadership in the development of articulation initiatives.
  • Assists in the planning, development, and implementation of college sponsored recruitment and retention activities including student orientations, registrations, and award ceremonies, and/or advising student activity groups, as assigned.
  • Engages in professional activities related to the area of teaching specialization that partner the college with the wider community by serving on college or system teams, or participating in community-sponsored events, as assigned.
  • Remains technologically and pedagogically current within the specialized field of instruction through participation in relevant professional associations and educational and training activities. Utilizes appropriate instructional and administrative technologies as required for teaching effectiveness and college operations/communication.
  • Observes all academic policies and procedures and institutional rules and regulations and demonstrates ethical and professional behavior.
  • Serves on and leads college or system committees, as assigned.
  • Complies with all system, college, state and federal rules and regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university with major study in English (Language or Literature) or Rhetoric / Composition.

Experience: Five (5) years of teaching experience in English, or five (5) years of business or industry experience directly related to the field of English.

RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS: Thorough knowledge of teaching methods and materials, problems and subject matter as relates to course of instruction. Considerable knowledge of the principles, methods, techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in postsecondary teaching. Knowledge of educational standards and procedures in the Technical Institute or College to which assigned. Ability to work with and secure the cooperation of others. Ability to maintain comprehensive records of the progress and development of the individual student. Evidence of good professional attitude. Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the college’s appointing authority.

  • Coordinates and leads departmental activities and operations by meeting with executive and advisory groups to discuss needs, career development and the effectiveness of instruction, developing and evaluating credit and non-credit programs and/or courses, mentoring faculty in subject area competency and instructional expertise, actively cultivating and maintaining collaborative relationships with business and industry within the field of instruction, and engaging in outreach to educational partners for the development and implementation of articulation initiatives.

Education: Master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university with major study in English (Language or Literature) or Rhetoric / Composition. Possession of a Master’s degree in Education shall require twelve (12) graduate credits in English and a Bachelor’s degree in a subject area closely related to English.

Experience: Six (6) years of teaching experience in English, or six (6) years of business or industry experience directly related to the field of English two years’ which shall have been in the supervision of personnel or program/project administration.

RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS: Thorough knowledge of teaching methods and materials, problems and subject matter as relates to course of instruction. Complete knowledge of the principles, methods, techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in postsecondary teaching. Ability to evaluate student progress and provide guidance to both students and instructors. Ability to supervise professional instructional staff and collaborate in development of programs, policies and procedures. Ability to work effectively with businesses and community organizations. Ability to originate and implement new programs and to improve existing programs. Evidence of good professional attitude. Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the college’s appointing authority.
